What a 4 kWp Dublin Roof Actually Gets From the SEAI Solar Grant
What a 4 kWp Dublin Roof Actually Gets From the SEAI Solar Grant
The SEAI solar electricity grant is not a flat cheque that appears the day panels land. It is tier maths. First band at one rate, second band at a lower rate, hard cap when you hit 4 kWp, and nothing extra above that. If you are sizing Solar Panels Dublin for a 1980s semi or a redbrick terrace, the useful question is not “is there a grant?” It is “what euro figure does this roof size actually unlock?” This walkthrough does that arithmetic once, with the public rates, then stops.
Two tiers, one cap
Under the current Better Energy Homes solar electricity line, the first 2 kWp of system size attract €700 per kWp. That first band alone is €1,400. From 2 kWp up to 4 kWp, every additional kilowatt-peak attracts €200 per kWp. That second band can add another €400. Reach exactly 4 kWp and the two bands sum to €1,800 — the maximum. Go past 4 kWp and the grant does not climb. A 5 kWp or 6 kWp array still tops out at €1,800 on this measure. The public source is SEAI’s solar electricity grant page, inside the wider individual home energy grants set. Mention once. Move on.
Worked sizes for a Dublin roof conversation:
- 2.0 kWp → €700 × 2 = €1,400
- 3.0 kWp → €1,400 + (€200 × 1) = €1,600
- 3.5 kWp → €1,400 + (€200 × 1.5) = €1,700
- 4.0 kWp → €1,400 + (€200 × 2) = €1,800 (cap)
- 5.0 kWp → still €1,800 (no extra grant)
Partial kilowatts pro-rate. A 2.5 kWp design is €1,400 + €100 = €1,500. The installer quote should name the kWp you are applying for, because the grant offer locks to that size. Change the array later without telling SEAI and you create paperwork pain, not free money.
What the grant does not buy
The solar grant is a contribution against eligible solar PV. It is not a battery grant. Domestic battery storage is not on this line. It is not a free roof. Your quote still shows labour, scaffold or roof access, inverter, AC works, and the panels themselves. Zero-rate VAT on supply-and-install still sits in the wider consumer story, but VAT treatment is separate from the SEAI euro bands above. Do not mash them into one invented “you-pay” figure on a social caption.
Eligibility still matters before anyone drills a tile. The dwelling generally needs to have been built and occupied before 2021 for this individual solar pathway. You apply before works start. You need an SEAI-registered solar PV company — browse the public register on SEAI’s registered solar PV companies list. The homeowner application route runs through mgen.seai.ie. Offer first. Install after. That order is the job.
Sequence that protects the euro figure
Grant maths only lands if the process holds. Typical order for a Dublin install: appoint a registered installer and agree the kWp, submit the grant application and wait for the offer, have the installer apply to ESB Networks for the micro-generation connection before panels go up, install to the offered size, publish a post-works BER, then claim. ESB Networks connection paperwork routinely needs weeks of headroom — treat that as calendar, not optional. CRU keeps the wider retail electricity rules visible at cru.ie; your inverter still needs a clean grid handshake.
Fabric still comes first in most Dublin sequences. A thin attic leaks heat you later try to displace with generation. Monday’s short arithmetic on the after-grant attic residual versus five winters sits live here: €300 after-grant attic vs five Dublin winters. Solar does not cancel a crushed loft. It adds a generation line on top of a house that should already hold heat.
