Do Recessed Downlights Ruin Dublin Attic Insulation? Myth-Bust FAQ
Do Recessed Downlights Ruin Dublin Attic Insulation? Myth-Bust FAQ
Recessed spotlights look tidy from the sofa. From the loft they are a different story: holes through plasterboard and fittings in the cold roof. This FAQ settles the practical questions for a typical Dublin cold roof before you book home energy upgrades.
1. Do downlights mean I cannot insulate the attic at all?
No. Recessed fittings are a detail, not a veto. A cold-roof loft still wants continuous insulation at ceiling level.
2. Will covering a downlight with mineral wool start a fire?
Old halogen cans ran hot. Modern sealed LED downlights may be rated against insulation, but check the marking and have an electrician assess unmarked fittings and wiring.
3. Is a sealed LED downlight done without loft work?
A sealed unit stops the fitting becoming a chimney for warm air, but it does not replace the quilt. You still need depth and continuity.
4. What about old open cans?
Open cans that vent into the loft are heat leaks. Replace them with insulation-compatible sealed LEDs, fit a fire-rated hood, or agree a clear keep-out zone.
5. Does the BER care about light fittings?
The BER notices the ceiling U-value and whether insulation looks continuous.
6. Can I spray foam around the lights?
Not as a casual DIY patch. Plan the loft build-up with products matching fire and electrical rules.
7. What does a proper survey look for?
Check fitting type, clearances, junction boxes, cable condition and any fire hoods.
8. Do SEAI attic grants pay to change the lights?
The attic line pays for the insulation measure when you qualify, not a blank cheque for lighting redesign. Confirm current figures on seai.ie.
