Insulation, Explained: Why You’re Probably Buying It All Wrong
Let’s talk about your house. Specifically, let’s talk about the fact that your house is probably a giant, leaky, energy-sucking sieve.
If you live in Ireland, you know the feeling. The damp chill that creeps in around 4 PM. The boiler that sounds like it’s preparing for orbital re-entry, running 24/7 from October to April. The gas bill that arrives and makes you want to sit very quietly in a dark room.
So, you decide to do something about it. You’re a responsible adult. You’ll get… “Insulation.”
You march to your computer, full of purpose, and type “home insulation” into Google. And that’s when the universe punches you in the face.
Suddenly, you’re drowning in a sea of acronyms. PIR. XPS. EPS. Lambda. U-Value. R-Value. You’re reading about “thermal conductivity,” “compressive strength,” and “hygroscopic properties.”
It’s all deeply confusing, and it’s designed to be. You’re overwhelmed. You just want a warm house. You just want to stop setting fire to €50 notes every time you turn on the heat. All you want to know is… “What’s the cheapest stuff that works?”
This is the “Simple Question.” And it’s a good one. It’s the one we set out to answer, diving deep into the nerdy world of Irish building supplies to create a “Price-Per-R-Value Index.” We wanted to find the ultimate “bang for your buck” insulation.
And we did. We found a clear winner.
But in finding the answer to the “Simple Question,” we discovered a much more important truth. We discovered that “What’s the cheapest insulation?” is the single worst question you can possibly ask.
It turns out you’re not just buying “warmth.” You’re buying “thinness,” or “strength,” or “fire safety,” or “waterproofing.” And if you buy the cheapest “warmth” for the wrong job, you’re not saving money. You’re throwing it away.
Welcome to the Great Insulation Deep Dive. By the end of this, you’ll understand exactly what you’re buying, why it’s so expensive, and how to actually make your house warmer without getting ripped off.
First, What Are You Even Buying? (The Coat Store Analogy)

Imagine you’re cold. You go to a coat store. But the store is a nightmare.
Instead of “Puffer Jackets” and “Raincoats,” the signs say “Phenolic” and “Polyisocyanurate.” Instead of “Warm” or “Very Warm,” the labels have complex physics equations. This is the insulation market.
You can ignore 99% of it. To become an expert, you only need to understand two concepts. That’s it. Just two.
Concept 1: Lambda ($lambda$) – The “Fabric Quality”
Every insulation material has a “thermal conductivity” number, also known as its Lambda (written as $lambda$).
Don’t panic. This is just a nerdy way of saying “how good the fabric is.”
It measures how easily heat passes through a material. For insulation, you want a LOW Lambda number. A low Lambda means the material is high-quality “fabric” (like goose down) that’s very bad at letting heat escape.
- A low Lambda (e.g., 0.019) is like a high-tech, space-age goose-down. It’s amazing at trapping heat.
- A high Lambda (e.g., 0.044) is like a thin, cheap cotton t-shirt. Heat zips right through it.
Lambda is the inherent quality of the material itself. It’s the first and most important number to look for. When you see thermal conductivity charts, just remember: low number = good stuff.
Concept 2: R-Value – The “Total Puffy-ness”
Lambda is the quality of the fabric. But the total warmth of your coat also depends on how thick it is.
This “total warmth” is the R-Value.
R-Value is a simple calculation: R-Value = Thickness / Lambda
This is everything. This is the magic formula.
It tells us you can get a “warm coat” (a high R-Value) in two different ways:
- Get a thin layer of an amazing fabric (low Lambda).
- Get a massive, puffy layer of a crappy fabric (high Lambda).
For example, 200mm of that “crappy” cotton t-shirt fabric ($lambda=0.044$) would give you an R-Value of 4.5 ($0.200 / 0.044 = 4.54$).
But to get the exact same R-Value using the “amazing” goose-down fabric ($lambda=0.022$), you’d only need 100mm of thickness ($0.100 / 0.022 = 4.54$).
Both coats are “equally warm.” One is just twice as thick as the other.
When you buy insulation, you are buying R-Value. The Irish government’s SEAI grants, for example, are all based on you achieving a certain target R-Value. The R-Value is the “score” you’re trying to hit.
So, now we can finally ask our “Simple Question” in the right way:
“What’s the cheapest way to buy R-Value points in Ireland?”
The 2024 “Price-Per-R-Value” Winner Is…
We did the maths. We went to the websites of major Irish builders’ suppliers. We took the pack price, divided it by the square metres in the pack, and then divided that by the R-Value of the product.
This gave us the “Price-Per-R-Point-Per-m².” It’s the ultimate “bang for your buck” number. The lowest number wins.
And the winner, by a country mile, is…
Basic, cheap, fluffy Glass Wool Loft Roll.
The kind of stuff you see in the attic. Brands like Isover Spacesaver or Knauf Eko Roll. This stuff is dirt cheap.
Our analysis showed it costs about €1.68 per “R-point.”
The next-best value, the rigid PIR boards (the silver foil-backed ones), came in at around €4.56 per “R-point.”
This isn’t a small difference. The fluffy glass wool is nearly 2.7 times more cost-effective for buying “raw warmth.”
So, that’s it, right? Blog post over. Just buy the fluffy stuff and stuff it everywhere.
…No.
This finding is a trap. And to understand why, we need to introduce our new analogy.

The “Fluffy Cloud” vs. The “Gilet”
Think of that cheap Glass Wool roll not as insulation, but as a “Fluffy Cloud.”
It’s cheap. It’s massive. It’s got no structure. It’s just a big, floppy, fluffy… cloud. It technically has a huge R-Value, but its form is a nightmare.
Now, think of that expensive PIR board as a “High-Tech Gilet.”
It’s thin. It’s rigid. It’s sleek. It’s packed with high-tech “goose down” (a low $lambda$ of 0.022). It has the exact same R-Value as a Fluffy Cloud… but it’s 10 times thinner and 100 times more rigid.
The price difference isn’t a rip-off. You’re not comparing two equal things. You’re comparing a giant, shapeless cloud to a precisely engineered, slim-fit gilet.
You’re not paying for R-Value. You’re paying for “Form Factor.”
And this is the secret: The job determines the form factor.
Stop Asking “What’s Cheapest?” Start Asking “What’s the Job?”
Your house has different “jobs.” And each job needs a different “form factor.” Once you get this, you’ll never be confused again.
Job 1: The Attic (The “Fluffy Cloud Zone”)
The Goal: Get a massive R-Value (warmth) into a huge, open, empty space where nobody cares about thickness or structure.
This is the Fluffy Cloud’s natural habitat! This is the one place in your house where a giant, cheap, fluffy cloud is the perfect solution. You just unroll it and let it be fluffy. You have all the space in the world.
Using the expensive, thin “Gilet” (PIR board) up here would be insane. It would be like paying 2.7 times more money for “thinness” in a place where “thinness” has zero value.
This is why so many experts say that quality attic insulation is the single most cost-effective upgrade you can make. It’s the “low-hanging fruit” of home warmth. You’re losing up to 30% of your home’s heat right through the roof, and the solution is the cheapest, easiest-to-buy product on the market.
Job 2: The Walls (The “No-Fluff Zone”)
The Goal: Get a high R-Value into a tiny 100mm-150mm space (either in your cavity or when dry-lining) where you absolutely cannot afford to lose room space.
Now, try to do this job with the “cheapest” product. Try to stuff your Fluffy Cloud into that 100mm gap.

What happens? It doesn’t work. You’d have to compress it, which ruins its R-Value. Or, if you’re building a stud wall, it will just slump. Over time, the big fluffy cloud will sink to the bottom of the wall, leaving a giant cold patch at the top. It’s a disaster.
This job requires a different form factor. This job demands the “High-Tech Gilet” (the PIR board).
Yes, it’s 2.7 times more expensive “per R-point.” But what you’re buying isn’t the R-point. You’re buying the “Thinness” and the “Rigidity” that lets you get that R-Value into a wall.
Suddenly, the price makes perfect sense. The Gilet is the correct tool for the job. The Fluffy Cloud is not.
Meet the Rest of the “Specialist” Crew
Once you understand the “Form Factor” secret, the rest of the confusing insulation market snaps into perfect focus. All those other products are just “Gilets” with extra-special skills. You’re paying a premium for those skills.
The Bouncer (Rockwool / Stone Wool Slabs)
This looks like the Fluffy Cloud, but it’s not. It’s a dense, rigid slab made of spun stone. It’s a “Bouncer.”
Its R-Value is… fine. Not great. But you’re not buying it for its R-Value. You’re buying it because it’s an absolute unit.
Its “Form Factor” specialty is Acoustics and Fire Safety.
Because it’s so dense, it’s amazing at killing sound. Put this in the internal walls between your kids’ bedrooms or in the floor above a noisy living room. It’s also made of rock, so it literally cannot burn. You’re paying for peace, quiet, and safety.

The Submarine (XPS – Extruded Polystyrene)
This is the blue or pink rigid board. It looks a bit like the “Gilet” (PIR), but its R-Value is worse. So why would you buy it?
Because it’s a “Submarine.”
Its “Form Factor” specialty is Waterproofing and Strength.
It’s “closed-cell,” which is a fancy way of saying it cannot absorb water. Ever. It’s also got incredible “compressive strength,” meaning you can park a car on it.
You use this under your concrete floor slab, or in your basement, or on a flat roof. Places where it’s going to get wet or crushed. If you used the “Gilet” (PIR) here, it would soak up water, turn to mush, and fail. The Submarine is the only tool for the job. You’re paying for “Invincibility.”
The Hipster (Sheep’s Wool)
This is the “eco-friendly” option. Its R-Value is… fine. Almost identical to the cheap “Fluffy Cloud.”
Its price? Astronomical. It’s 6.5 times more expensive than Glass Wool for the same R-Value.
So… it’s a scam? No. You’re just paying for a totally different “Form Factor.”
You’re paying for Eco-Vibes and “Breathability.”
It’s 100% natural, sustainable, and contains no weird binders. But its real superpower is that it’s “hygroscopic.” This means it can absorb and release moisture from the air, acting like a “breathable” lung for your house, which is amazing for timber-frame builds. You’re paying for a “green conscience” and a “healthy building.”
The Supermodel (Phenolic Board)
This is the “elite” board. It looks like the “Gilet” (PIR), but its Lambda is an insane 0.019. It’s the ultimate “goose down.”
It is, of course, wildly expensive.
Its “Form Factor” specialty is Ultimate Thinness.
You use this when even the “Gilet” is too thick. You’re in a tiny cottage with 2-foot-thick stone walls and you literally cannot spare more than 80mm for dry-lining, but you must hit a certain R-Value. This is your “break glass in case of emergency” product. You are paying a massive premium to save 20-30 millimetres of space.

So, What Have We Learned?
The “Simple Question” (“What’s cheapest?”) gives you a simple, useless answer: “Glass Wool.”
The “Smart Question” (“What’s the right product for the job?”) is the only one that matters.
This is the entire philosophy behind a “whole-home” approach. It’s not about just buying “insulation.” It’s about seeing your house as a system.
It’s about understanding how all these pieces—the U-Values (which is just the inverse of R-Value) and the R-Values—come together to give you a better Building Energy Rating (BER). It’s about knowing your Lambda from your R-Value.
This is the thinking that goes into proper home energy upgrades. It’s the core idea of a deep retrofit: using the right-spec “Bouncer” for the walls, the right “Submarine” for the floor, and the right “Fluffy Cloud” for the attic, all to turn your leaky sieve into a warm, efficient, comfortable home.
